HISTORICAL TRIANGLE – Here are some important news and briefings in and around the Historical Triangle.

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM), in partnership with Dominion Energy, will test the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) infrastructure at the Surry Power Plant on Monday, June 6.

  • Trial 1: 12:00 p.m.
  • Trial 2: 12:25 p.m.

This test will support ongoing preparations to transition the existing siren system to the WEA for emergencies at Virginia’s two nuclear power plants. Testing will validate system design standards and help identify any administrative improvements.

The test message sent to the WEA infrastructure will only be received by specially configured phones and will state: “This is a wireless emergency alert test. No action is required.

Only phones that have been specifically chosen to receive system test messages will display the message. Most cell phones do not display the test message. In the event of a real emergency, everyone with alerts enabled will automatically receive wireless emergency alerts on compatible phones, even if they don’t receive test messages.

For more details on the siren alert transition to WEA, visit Dominion Energy’s FAQ page.

More information about WEA can be found at Integrated Public Alert & Warning System | FEMA.gov.
