UCI offers Netflix Pathways bootcamps to improve career preparation for alumni | UCI News


Irvine, California, October 28, 2021 – The University of California Irvine Continuing Education Division invites alumni to apply for Netflix Pathways Boot Camps.

These free online training programs in cutting-edge technology areas are available through a partnership with Netflix, the world’s largest streaming entertainment service; 2U, a global education technology company; and historically black colleges and universities and Hispanic institutions across the country. The mission of bootcamps is to diversify and accelerate the careers of the next generation of technology leaders. From January 2022, the UCI Continuing Education Division and Netflix will offer part-time introductory courses in software development, data science and UX / UI design to UCI alumni in classes of 2020 and 2021. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 19.3% of the more than 88,633 bachelor’s degrees awarded in the field of computer and information science in 2019 went to students who identified themselves as black or Hispanic. Stronger links between higher education and the workforce are one way to help close this persistent diversity gap.

By integrating a large public university like the UCI into the Netflix Pathways Bootcamps, we can continue to expand access to tech jobs for historically underrepresented talent, especially black and Latinx students.

The course materials for the bootcamps were developed by 2U in collaboration with subject matter experts from the Netflix organization. Students partner with seasoned employees from Netflix’s engineering, data, and UX / UI teams. They gain industry insight and key insights through regular one-on-one mentoring sessions and receive dedicated support services and career coaching from 2U advisors.

Since 2017, the UCI Continuing Education Division has been working with 2U to provide adults with high-quality, market-tailored bootcamps in areas such as coding, cybersecurity, data analytics, digital marketing and UX / UI design that have helped over 1,900 graduates gain the skills to pursue technology careers.
