Two free Narcan / naloxone training sessions will be held in November – Rochester Minnesota news, weather, sports

Two free training sessions will be held in November to train those interested in the use of the opioid overdose reversal drug Narcan / naloxone.

The Zumbro Valley Medical Society, in partnership with the Steve Rummler HOPE Network, will be hosting the trainings from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on November 11 at Christ United Methodist Church, 400 Fifth Ave. SW, and 9-10 a.m. Nov. 12 at the Salvation Army Corps Community Center, 20 First Ave. BORN.

Opioid-related overdose deaths have increased in Minnesota since 2000, according to

data from the Minnesota Department of Health.

In 2019, 427 people died of an opioid-related overdose. In September, the state health ministry

reported an 18% increase

of non-fatal drug overdoses treated by emergency services in 2020 compared to 2019. Non-fatal overdoses increased from 6,196 in 2019 to 7,290 in 2020, according to data from the health service.

During the training, participants will learn what naloxone / Narcan is, how it works when given to a person who has overdosed, how to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose and when to give. naloxone.

At the end of the hour-long training, participants will have the option of receiving an overdose prevention kit, with injectable naloxone.

Masks are mandatory to attend the training. It is not necessary to register to participate.
