It seems almost counterintuitive to battle Parkinson’s disease by donning heavy, padded boxing mitts and training like a fighter.
But that’s exactly what Kerry Howard did to keep this neuromuscular disease at bay. On Juneau afternoon this Tuesday, she will be joined by two of her coaches from Pavitt’s Gym, to celebrate her latest achievement – the prestigious American Parkinson’s Disease Association Northwest Chapter’s Optimism Award.
“Living with Parkinson’s disease is challenging, but it’s a disease you can live with, and I’m grateful for that,” Howard said in a statement. “No one knows what the future holds, but I believe in being kind, brave and grateful. Pessimists may be right more often, but optimists have more friends and have more fun.
