Florida State University Center for the study and promotion of communities, families and children and the Florida Association for the Education of Young Childrenn (FLAEYC) have launched a new certification program to help teachers develop their skills to better educate and support the emotional needs of their students.

According to FSU, certification participants will gain insight into the concept of the connection between a child’s emotions and thoughts and that of their classroom behavior that impacts a child’s social and emotional growth and ability to to learn.

“A major contributing factor to failures in school readiness is that the reality is that many children are not socially or emotionally ready to learn,” said James clark, dean and professor at the FSU College of Social Work. “This certification gives teachers the tools to help children navigate learning in the classroom.”

Professional certification modules will consist of 15 hours of course content and 15 modules of research-based readings, case scenarios, multimedia material, homework and quizzes. FSU added that the certification is designed to benefit a wide range of people engaged in early childhood learning, including early childhood education or early childhood fields, high school students, students who are preparing for an early childhood diploma or anyone with a position of influence in early childhood education. which provides technical assistance to educators and families.

“The goal of this program is for early childhood educators to create an environment in which young children thrive emotionally, understand emotions, develop coping mechanisms, acquire social skills and, in turn, be empowered to regulate their own emotions, open to learning and retain their knowledge. ,” noted Ellen piekalkiewicz, director of the Center for the Study and Promotion of Communities, Families and Children.

Certification includes the program developed by the Rebound & Recovery Center, which the FSU says will provide early educators with the tools to be successful in post-pandemic Florida.
