New Directions Pharmacy offers industry specific training sessions to support inclusiveness within pharmacies
Pharmacists across the UK are invited to participate in a series of free sign language webinars to help overcome communication barriers within pharmacies.
The online program, which will run over the next two months, is free to anyone working in the pharmacy industry. It was developed by New Directions Pharmacy to help pharmacists and support staff learn and use sign language in their daily working lives and help them overcome barriers in communication with their customers and the public.
New Directions Pharmacy is one of the UK’s leading pharmacy agencies, supplying locum and permanent pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and distributors to national and community pharmacies nationwide.
Its “Introduction to Basic Sign Language” course will offer participants three levels of tailor-made training for the pharmacy industry through three sessions that will take place via Microsoft Teams on September 21, October 6 and October 21.
Elen Searle, head of pharmacy at New Direction, said the course was developed with extensive industry knowledge and feedback that New Directions has gathered over many years of working in the industry.
“We are always looking for ways to support pharmacy staff, their clients and the communities in which they work, and we are delighted to make this course available to anyone working in pharmacy.” Elen said.
“This course has been specially designed for the pharmacy industry. It is offered free of charge to help the industry as a whole make the pharmacy experience as comfortable and supportive as possible for everyone. Whether it’s for a pharmacy in a small rural village or a large town, we know that sign language skills can have a significant impact on communities in every corner of the country.
“With greater awareness, we want to help open all possible doors for people with communication difficulties, as well as people with hearing loss, and have set up this course as a way to give back to those who work in the industry in return for what they have shared with us over the years.
The webinars will be hosted by accredited trainer Derek Tune, who has been teaching sign language to thousands of children and adults for over 20 years.
“If we think about the many reasons someone has reason to go to a pharmacy, it’s not hard to see how even more difficult asking for help can seem for those who have barriers to communication at the outset. “
“More often than not, clients are faced with very personal issues, either for themselves or for their loved ones, and approaching them with a degree of sensitivity and understanding is part of the routine for pharmacy staff at the clinic. nationwide.
“For me, therefore, it is essential that children and adults understand sign language as much as any other language, and removing or reducing barriers to promote effective communication within the pharmacy or any other healthcare facility is a important starting point. “
New Directions Pharmacy is a preferred supplier to local and independent pharmacies, large national corporations and supermarkets, as well as public sector organizations such as the Ministry of Defense, prison services and hospitals.
